Unlock your T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 for AT&T

Unlock your T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 for AT&T

Recently I ordered from Amazon a Lumia 710 locked to T-Mobile for a family member, the supported bands on this device according to the T-Mobile’s website are GSM 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS 850/1700/2100 (on Nokia USA the UMTS 1900 band is displayed) and AT&T supports the GSM 850/900 UMTS 850/1900 bands, so I thought why not order it and get an unlock code from eBay.

So far everything that I have tested works:

  • Calls (incoming/outgoing)
  • Texts (for MMS read below)
  • Data (above 3G, read below)

When the Lumia 710 arrived I inserted the micro sim card and it asked me for the unlock code, after receiving the code from an eBay seller and unlocking the device I tried to use the data since the device shows the 4G icon but it didn’t work! I needed to use an APN (like the network settings for my carrier),I tried wap.cingular on the APN settings and the internet worked perfectly, on the device browser I used www.mobilespeedtest.com and on the first test it gave me around 230kbps (around 2G/EDGE speeds), the second and third tests showed above 3G speeds 1473kbps-1520kbps (above basic DSL) so this is like 4G??

After several speed tests the max I got was 4.10Mbps download and 1.08Mbps upload.

Texts worked but not MMS, the device needed the right configurations for MMS but I couldn’t get into that settings inside of Mango or even the Nokia Diagnostics App, it didn’t had those options (you can access it by pressing ##634# on the dialer), after some research I found out that there’s a Nokia Network Setup App that will automatically setup your phone according to your carrier, after that the MMS worked!

I’m still unsure if AT&T is going to find out and throttle and/or cancel my data or if the only 3G band I’m getting is the UMTS 850 or a combination of the 850 and 1900 that the Nokia USA website specifies but 3G might not work in all areas, be aware.

Guide

What you need:

What to do:

  • Power off the phone
  • Insert the sim card
  • Turn on the phone
  • Enter the unlocking code when prompted
  • Do not enter any APN settings (delete them if you have any, it should be empty)
  • Go to the marketplace and search for “Nokia Network Setup”
  • Launch the application
  • Network settings will be added automatically now you can enjoy your Unlocked Nokia Lumia 710 =)

Did it work for you?

It looks like the Network Setup app is no longer available. Any idea how to accomplish this without it?
